Thank you.

2014 was an incredibly busy, yet rewarding, year.  Thank you to everyone who was apart of it and those who have supported me along the way.

Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas!

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas on this wonderful day. We had a great morning watching this little angel open her gifts from Santa.

More images of Garrett.

The second part of Garrett's senior session- this time, though, it was on his turf.  Besides the smell of stagnant, sweaty, high-school hockey equipment, the session went great!

A little cashew is what comes to mind when I look through Walker's photo session...  and I'm not talking about your run-of-the-mill "salted" cashews either.  The habanero ones that that have some kick to 'em are what I'm referring to.  This little guy was ready to play some basketball, maybe hit a few baseballs off a tee and skateboard around the house before flying a kite in the backyard.  He was ready to go as soon as the session started.

Her name might be Kiana but if they would've said Cheeks McGhee, I wouldn't have disagreed!  How perfect are her little lips, nose, eyes, ears and toes?

Another great senior session in downtown Mt. Clemens on a brisk, fall morning. Here's a few of my favorites:

Happy Halloween!

From our Little Mermaid.

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

Here are some of my favorites from Tyler's senior photos taken in downtown Mt. Clemens.

An energetic family at Stony Creek Metropark.

Getting one kid to sit still for a session is easy.  Two?  definitely manageable.  Five?  Now that's crazy talk!  Thankfully these kids were able to wind down for just a few seconds to get the last photo of all of them standing so nice... then, not-so-nice.

By the way, I think the "not-so-nice" picture is my favorite for the session!

So much has changed since her last photo session!  We took a walk through Waldenburg Park for some happy 6-month photos of this little princess.  Somehow we didn't get the message that mosquitogheddon was happening.  I have never seen so many Mosquitos, all in one place, this late in the season.  Oh, and I ate one...

Another little guy I photographed at George George Memorial Park:

Luckily we caught some great weather for Leo's session at George George Memorial Park.  Here are some of my favorites:

This little guy is gonna be a heartbreaker with his bright blue eyes and big smile. I know he's already got Mom wrapped around his finger :)  Here are a few favorites from his photo session at Yates Cider Mill this past weekend

Up early for some "Pure Michigan" moments.

Just a few photos from my trip to Yates Cider Mill today.  It was a busy morning that started off with a 1 year-old session at the cider mill and ended with a senior session in Mt. Clemens.  I love these perfect fall days!

Another perfect fall session.

Check out this awesome family from their session at Stony Creek Metropark!  I really enjoyed spending time with them (Jay is almost as funny as me) and the girls did great!  I never met two girls who cheesed as hard as they did when I lifted my camera up.  I had to perform some emergency maneuvers to catch more natural expressions.  It was definitely successful!

Here are some of my favorites:

Rob and Becka's country wedding.

All the details were in place for Rob and Becka's wedding in the small town of Sandusky, Michigan.  Everything except the sunshine was creatively handmade and the whole wedding flowed from the ceremony to reception.  I was really impressed and had a blast documenting it!

Here's beautiful baby Reagen posing for the camera at 5 days old!

Impromptu photo session.

I have a camera in my hands for a good part of most days yet, sadly enough, it's never pointed at my own family.  A couple days ago I was photographing my beautiful niece and Leah asked if she could have her picture taken.  Of course I took advantage of it!

Lilly and Drew are 3 months old!

The cute twins that I photographed in July are growing up so fast!   Little Drew has caught up to his big sister.  They look so much alike now!  Thankfully they coordinated their crying fits for the session- when one started, the other one stopped.  They sure made it easy to figure out who to take pictures of next!

It's amazing to think that exactly 3 months ago from his birth day, we were taking pregnancy photos of Cohen's Mom and Dad!  He was just 1/3 of his current size and comfy-cozy at a toasty 98.6 degrees inside Mom.

The photo session started a little rough because the little guy was a little fussy... swaddling, feeding, holding... nothing worked.  Then it hit me.  more heat!  After all, I believe it was only a mere 85 degrees and sweltering in the room already.  So I turned up the heat a little more and within seconds, he turned into jello.  We cruised through the rest of the session and he did great!  According to his Dad, "heat" was Cohen's kryptonite.  We all have our weaknesses...

Here were the before pictures...

Martin and Raelina's Wedding.

These two Californians came back to Raelina's home-state of Michigan and officially tied the knot!  I'm so glad they did because I was able to spend the day capturing all of the special moments that made their wedding magical.

I've known Raelina for almost 8 years and she looked awesome in her wedding dress.  She's never looked so happy in her life!  I met Martin for the first time since they live so far away, but in that short time, I noticed how sincere, funny and constantly relaxed he was- which fits Raelina perfectly because she's the exact opposite of "relaxed".  In fact, I would go as far to say that she has as much energy as a 4 year-old who just ate 3 Snickers bars :)  Something obvious to everyone at their wedding was their passion.  They're both passionate people and it's always great to be able to capture this kind of love.

I wish them luck and good will in their new life together and cannot wait to watch their story unfold.  Congratulations Raelina and Martin!

What a perfect, little baby girl- all of her tiny features were just right!  And she was so cooperative :)  A few months ago, while Ms. Kaley was in the oven, we did family photos of her mom, dad, and big brother.  I guess that's why she behaved so well... because this wasn't her first go-around at the "photo session thing".

Ryan and Alexia's Wedding.

When Alexia contacted me about her East Lansing wedding, I knew I had to be there.  Other than it being the most beautiful location on earth, it was also the location of my alma mater.  The icing on the cake was that Ryan and Alexia were really, really great people!  Super great, awesome people, actually.  It turned out to be the perfect day from start-to-finish and I enjoyed hanging with them during this special moment in their lives.  They both had great humor and really made it easy to capture some beautiful images.

Mia turns 1!

Mia just celebrated her first birthday this past weekend!  We visited the park to get photos of her at this big, important age.  She rocked it out in all of her vibrant, "girly" dresses and headband bows.  The colors of her outfits really popped against the calm, beautiful trees and winding paths.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the session:

Garrett's senior session.

"Garrett? Garrett? GARRETT!" screamed his mom as soon as I pulled into the driveway.  "MATT'S HERE, HURRY UP!"

Garrett's mom, who is also a friend of mine, seems to be doing a great job of making sure her son wants to go away to college to further his education. At least that's what it seemed like from the first 23 seconds of my arrival.

Our recent cruise aboard the Caribbean Princess.

Let me start of by saying that this was my first cruise ever and I wouldn't hesitate to go again.  It was amazing.  On our trip, we visited the Eastern Caribbean aboard the Caribbean Princess during a 7-day voyage.  We came back relaxed and refreshed with plenty of great stories to tell.

I want to do an unofficial "official" review of the cruise in a future post, so I'll leave this shirt segment with some beautiful images of the islands we visited.  At the end of the post is a short and sweet, family video from our trip.

The sun sets on the St. Clair River.

I don't like to be cliché but here's a photo of a beautiful sunset over the St. Clair River during Nick and Kiley's wedding.

Kiley and Nick's Wedding.

Details, details, details... Kiley and Nick's wedding was filled with them!  It all started off with a boat ride to the location, which was a beautiful summer home on Lake St. Clair.  Every inch of the island was pristine and decorated for the big celebration.  The colors all flowed together from one end to the other- it was simply perfect.  The weather stayed a pleasant 80° with a slight breeze and not a single drop of rain!  When the guests arrived, the music started and so did the party.  From the beginning to the end, it was a blast to be apart of such a unique, fun and intimate wedding.

Alyssa turns 4!

Alyssa was a professional when it came to posing for the camera.  She had all the important smiles nailed down: the open smile, closed smile, easy smile, full-face smile, laughing smile, awkward smile and even the "Chandler Bing" smile!  She helped make some awesome pictures and definitely earned the balloons by the end of the session.

Here are some of my favorites:

Stefan and Gretchen.

It's widely known that rain on a wedding day means "good luck".  So when the severe storm came on Sunday afternoon, 15 minutes before Stefan and Gretchen were to walk down the aisle of their outdoor wedding, Stefan and a group of guys quickly moved everything inside.  Surprisingly, the ceremony started only a few minutes behind!  The whole time, Gretchen and Stefan were calm and collected-something you wouldn't normally see from a bride and groom during a last-minute change of plans.  But that's why these two are so perfect for each other.  They rolled with the punches and still delivered an amazing ceremony for their guests.

The Rivet family.

I can't believe it's been almost 4 years since I originally photographed Joe, Cindy and their (then smaller) family.  They had two more little ones since then.  Each child had their own, unique personality but the one love they all shared was ice cream.  It was the goto bribe (mood enhancer) to keep them all focused during the hour-long session. The weather couldn't have been more perfect.  It was such a great session and a lot of fun.

Kellen turns 1!

There were lots of great moments captured during this family session on the Clinton River in Mount Clemens, Michigan.  Even though little Kellen had just turned 1, he walked like a 5 year-old on a sugar high!  I had to work fast to keep up with turbo-legs Kellen.  His energy and good looks made him a lot of fun to photograph.  Maybe Kellen can give some of that energy to his mom and dad when they have Baby Thompson #2 to care for in a couple months!

Some portraits of our little sweetheart.

I've been doing so many sessions for other clients recently that I forget to update some of our own family photos.  This morning I noticed Leah wearing a cute summer dress and she looked beautiful!  I knew I had to get some photos of her wearing it.  To my surprise, she cooperated!

Scott and Carol's Wedding.

I met Carol and Scott for the first time a few months ago when I did their engagement photo session. At the time I remember thinking, "Wow, these two are perfect for each other!" Last Friday, as I photographed their wedding, I thought the same exact thing!  These two compliment each other in so many ways that their love is undeniable when they walk into a room.

They tied the knot at the beautiful Villa Victoria Chapel on Silver Lake in Waterford, Michigan. Close family and friends watched when the two said their vows and kissed for the first time as husband and wife.  Their ceremony was perfect- peaceful and memorable.  I don't think they could have picked a better day.

Robert and Becka's Engagement.

It wasn't losing the radio station I was listening to, the 7 degree drop in temperature or roaming for cell service.  It wasn't the bug guts littering my windshield either- nope.  I knew I was "up north" because of the beauty that surrounded me.  The thick trees and cottages that lined the road.  The views of Lake Huron from the right and farmland to the left.  The intermittent 35 mph zones through small towns and the smell of fresh, country air.  Yep, I was in up-north Michigan and it was only an hour and a half away from my house!

Leah's first jewelry box.

I blame my mom for the "Icantsitstill-itis" disease that currently affects me.  I'm a full-time registered nurse, a dad to a busy-bee when I'm not at work, a part-time photographer (although it's been feeling more like full-time lately) and a husband (I'm so sorry Haley)!  But I can't sit still!  So when one of my coworkers gave me some black walnut from her late-Dad, who carved it as a hobby, I knew I had to make something pretty special.  After approximately 7 seconds, I knew exactly what to make: A jewelry box for one of the most important girls in my life!

Lilly and Drew.

Before Lilly and Drew's parents found out they were having two, I was asked if I could photograph their baby. "No problem", I thought, as I've been getting very proficient with my newfound love for baby photography. My session times have dramatically decreased as my comfort level, image quality and baby experience have increased.

Then, a month later, they dropped the bomb. "Guess what? We're having twins!"

"Twins?!" My inner-photographer was doing a happy dance similar to Gabby Douglas on floor exercise while my distress-equilibrium-module was at a 12 on a scale of 0-10! Handling and posing one new, new, new baby can be challenging, but now there were suddenly two? The next few months leading up to their birth, I began planning my posing strategy and going over the "what-if" scenarios if both babies weren't cooperative. I really wanted to capitalize on this awesome opportunity.

A few weeks before the due date, something happened and the weight of the situation was suddenly lifted.  I remembered that they came to me for photos because they were confident in my skills and trusted me to take awesome images. I basically just needed to stop over-thinking it and trust in my own skills and everything would fall into place.

The session day arrived and I was greeted by two beautiful babies. If I didn't already know they were twins, I wouldn't have believed it. They each had their own look and facial expressions. It wasn't until I snuggled them close together that it was apparent. They warmly embraced each other and seemed to melt in each other's arms. After every pose, Mom and I stood back and admired the beauty in it all. Her excitement was contagious and I think it showed in the photos.

The actual session took approximately 2.5 hours, which was just right for two babies. Everything went smoothly and believing in myself was probably the best thing I could've done to get the results I got. Next time I have a set of twins to photograph, I'll save the worrying for the parents who will be raising them :)

Now, for their first official photographs, here are Lilly and Drew:

A family session at Stoney Creek Metropark.

We took a trip to Stoney Creek this past Wednesday for some fun, family portraits. This is one of my favorite spots to photograph because of the natural beauty.  It's always very clean and there are literally thousands of locations inside to use for a backdrop.

The kiddos were great as well.  Mom had me a little worried when she said the little one is a "wild man" with the attention span of 2 seconds- but, a little distraction with some grass and sticks and he was putty in my hands.  His big sister must have been practicing her poses all week because she knocked it out too.  She was having a lot of fun, even suggesting photos that I should do.  I guess you could say she was my junior photographer assistant.  They were such a great family to photograph and I had so many favorites that it was hard to choose just a few for the blog.

Chris and Janine: A pregnancy session.

Michigan weather is pretty unpredictable and it's not uncommon to experience all four seasons in one day.  However, this past Sunday (which was the start of summer), the weather was absolutely perfect for Chris and Janine's pregnancy session.  After a brief morning rain, the clouds broke and gave us some awesome overcast lighting from above.

These two are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their first baby- a boy!  Thankfully, Janine has had lots of experience caring for a child... kind of.  It's no secret to anyone that Chris is actually a man-child and requires much of the same attention and dedication as three children under the age of 6.  His spontaneouty and persistence keeps Janine on her toes at all times.  I have no doubt that Chris will be the Dad who builds an actual flying rocket ship with his son and travels to outer-space.  He is an engineer, after all.

One thing I've noticed over the years of knowing Chris and Janine is they are a very loving and caring couple.  Their new baby is lucky to have them because I know they will be awesome parents.  I'm excited to meet him this August and to be the first one to photograph him.

For now, here are some pics of the parents-to-be:

Emily at the barn.

It's been a few years since I photographed this peanut inside of bowls and covered blankets in May of 2011.  The one thing I remembered about her as a newborn was all of that hair!  At 3, it's all about her beautiful blue eyes.

We've known Emily's parents for a long time but unfortunately haven't seen them since the last photo session.  We had them over for breakfast before pictures and watched our kids play together for the first time.  Both of them were very articulate when they spoke and they shared so many similarities in their thought processes- most notably, their negotiating skills.  Leah is pretty observant when it comes to everything going on around her and Emily was the same way.

As a father, I tend to notice all the little things that make each kid unique and special.  Emily, like Leah, is strong-willed, intense, focused, determined and definitely a leader.  She walks to the beat of her own drum and that's a good thing.  This spirited child will grow up and do many amazing things because it's in her nature.

Bryan and Meggan's Engagement.

Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan was the starting point for Bryan and Meggan's engagement session last Thursday.  When we arrived, we were surprised to see that a movie company had taken over one of the locations I planned to use for the session.  Out of curiosity, I asked one of the security guys what movie was being shot and he gave me the "I can't tell you" runaround.  My first thought was to stay nearby in case Rachel McAdams showed up (she's on my list and Haley would totally understand given the circumstances) but we had to get on with the session because it was already 6:30 and daylight was dwindling.  My dreams of meeting Rachel, Rach, Ra, Chel, R, or whatever she wants me to call her, would have to wait another day.  Then the clouds that had been lingering around all day began to break and gray and dreary light turned into golden-rays of goodness!  Things were looking good.
